New research indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
