Disappointing Oracle Results Wipe More Than $70bn Off Market Value, Amplifying AI Bubble Concerns.

Oracle's disappointing latest earnings have slashed in excess of $70 billion from the worth of the software and data giant co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison, adding to growing concerns of a hype cycle in AI-related stocks.

Steep Share Price Fall Comes After Sales Miss

Stock in the company plunged by 11.5% overnight after it reported a disappointing 14% growth in sales to $16bn in the previous quarter, as it simultaneously revealed plans to boost its artificial intelligence investment by around $fifteen billion dollars.

The enterprise posted softer-than-forecast quarterly revenues for the quarter ending in November, with sales at its key cloud computing division expanding at a slower pace than forecast, at 34%.

Market Concerns Over Investment and Debt

Markets were further let down by a slower than expected sixty-eight percent growth in revenues from its cloud infrastructure unit.

At the same time, the market were unnerved by the firm's increased forecasts for AI investment. It now anticipates capex to surge by forty percent to $50bn, with the bulk of the additional spending directed toward constructing data centres.

This aggressive investment strategy is set against a increasing debt pile, with Oracle's long-term debt having increased by 25% over the past year to reach $nearly one hundred billion dollars.

"Honestly, the report was not catastrophic, but it came to confirm worries around substantial AI spending, financed by debt, with an unclear timeframe for revenue generation," commented a senior analyst.

Wider Sector Repercussions and Industry Concerns

Sustained optimism about the promise of AI technology has driven a surge in stock prices in recent months, but there has been a growing spate of warnings from regulators and executives who warn equity prices could tumble if investors become let down by the development or adoption of AI technology.

While Oracle has become an important tech player developing enterprise solutions for large corporations worldwide and has in recent years found strength in cloud computing, there are increasing concerns about how dependent companies are becoming on mutual investment within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle reported that its measure of contractual revenue soared by 440% over the last twelve months. However, market watchers were skeptical when it emerged that these contracts were driven by large deals from major customers like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are two solid customers, it will not soothe fears that the tech sector's AI investments are interdependent, which makes the sector susceptible to a loss of market faith," commented a market strategist.

"In summary, robust contract growth was not enough to calm anxiety about AI and the huge amount of capital expenditure required by firms to construct AI infrastructure."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Shares

Other AI and tech-related stocks also fell in after-hours trading following the Oracle report. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock fell by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares tumbled by 7.7% on Thursday.
